Hi Amrisha
Could you tell me about the medicine NOCK 2, prescribed to me for the headache that occurs frequently.

And also about the tablet dramamine (no longer available in the market) but its substitute called GRAVOL prescribed for the giddiness my husband started to have after he had an operation way back in the year 1994

Dear B,
NOCK 2(Wanbury Limited) is a combination of nimesulide and paracetamol.. and Nimesulide is banned in the US...
For headache ..pls take just CALPOL(paracetamol) only. Is that a migraine pain by any chance?

GRAVOL...
This is a dru for motion-sickness, nausea and giddiness
Motion sickness: The initial dose should be taken at least 30 minutes and preferably 1 to 2 hours before departure.

The usual adult dose is 50 mg to 100 mg taken every 4 hours as needed. Do not exceed the recommended maximum dose of 400 mg over a 24-hour period.

For adults requiring extended relief, 1 to 2 of the 75 mg long-acting capsules (or caplets) may be taken every 8 hours. Do not take more than the recommended maximum of 5 capsules (or caplets) over a 24-hour period.

The usual adult dose of dimenhydrinate suppository is 50 mg to 100 mg every 6 to 8 hours as needed.

Pre-radiation therapy (radiation sickness): 50 mg to 100 mg of dimenhydrinate may be given as a suppository or injection, 30 to 60 minutes before receiving radiation therapy. This dose may be repeated as needed up to a maximum of 400 mg over a 24-hour period.

Surgery: To control nausea and vomiting following surgery, 50 mg to 100 mg given by mouth or 50 mg of injection into a muscle may be used before surgery, as well as following surgery using similar doses as needed. Do not exceed the recommended maximum dose of 400 mg over a 24-hour period.

Hello Amrisha
This is lakshmi here. I had asked abt the tablet NOCK 2 and GRAVOL.
Nock 2 was prescribed to me as an SOS medicine. Had gone to the ENT complaining abt severe frequently recurring headache as it was felt headache might be due to sinusitus - not sure it is migraine. The diagnosis made says that there is some extra growth in the bone of the nose area which might be the reason for the recurring head pain. A surgery to scrape the same was suggested. A friend who had gone through the same suggested not to go ahead with the surgery. Since NOCK 2 was giving me relief, i am using the same. Have not got the surgery done still. Am at a loss as what to do, since I still do get these headache which happens to be real severe sometimes.
Thanks a lot

Surgery is the best solution if there is an extra bone growth... Cos remember taking the chemicals (as nmedicines/drugs) for too long can have its own impact.
But this is my sugestion.. discuss about this with with doc .. before doing anything.. NICE /NOCK 2 occasionally may not harm but taking it every other day has severe implications

It is unfortunate that like many other drugs in India, Nimeusulide has
been wrongly promoted in combination with other drugs. These
combinations are promoted by the manufacturers with an idea of
providing greater relief due to a broad spectrum of coverage. However,
this is far from being true. Most of these pain relievers act through a
common mechanism i.e., reduction of prostaglandin (the pain producing
chemical) formation in the body by inhibiting the enzyme
cyclo-oxygenase (COX). On the contrary the chances of toxic effects on
stomach, liver and kidneys are enhanced due to exposure to more drugs
and invariably it is difficult to know as to which these or
all of them are the culprit. Our own observation is that in a majority
of cases while prescribing and dispensing these pain relievers most of
the doctors as well as the pharmacists do not have any idea about the
constituents of the drugs in each of the brands.

Nimesulide, like other NSAIDs, exhibits adverse reactions in the major organ systems comprising the upper GI tract, liver, kidney, skin and immune systems. Noteworthy is the fact that this drug has relatively low occurrences of GI ulcers and bleeding, asthma and respiratory tract reactions and does not appear to have the cardiovascular reactions (congestive heart failure, myocardial infarction) that has been observed recently with the coxibs and some other NSAIDs.

Nimesulide was never permitted to be used in United States, Canada, Britain, Australia etc. In few countries where it was permitted such as Finland, Spain, Turkey, it has been banned due to severe side effects including deaths and liver failure needing liver transplant. Its use in children was either not allowed at all including Switzerland, where the medicine was discovered, or if allowed (such as Portugal, Israel),it was banned in 1999 when some children died. Bangladesh has just banned the use in children with immediate effect and disallowed the import of bulk drug so that in effect the use in adults will also come to and end once the current stocks are exhausted. Nimesulide is a Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drug (NSAID). There are many alternatives such as diclofenac (Brand names: Dicloran, Doflex) just to mention one.

I would suggest that you should definitely discuss this with the doctor and then weigh the use ..
